“Chandra” means “moon” and “Bhedana” means “piercing” or “penetrating.” Chandra Bhedana Pranayama focuses on activating the cooling lunar energy by breathing exclusively through the left nostril. “Pranayama” is derived from “prana,” meaning “life force energy,” and “ayama,” meaning “control.”

Steps to perform the Asana: Chandra Bhedana Pranayama
  • Find a quiet and comfortable place where you can sit undisturbed.
  • Sit in a comfortable position, such as cross-legged (Sukhasana) or on a blanket with your feet flat on the ground.
  • Keep your back straight and shoulders relaxed.

  • Use your right hand to create Vishnu Mudra by folding the index and middle fingers towards the palm near the thumb, leaving the ring finger and little finger extended.
  • Rest your left hand on your left knee, palm facing upwards, and use Chin Mudra (touching the thumb and index finger together) for added focus.
  • Close your right nostril gently with your right thumb.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril, filling your lungs completely.
  • Close your left nostril with your ring finger and hold your breath for a moment.
  • Release the right nostril and exhale slowly and completely through it.
  • Continue this process for several minutes, focusing on the cooling and calming effect.
  • Conclude the practice with a few moments of deep, slow breathing to bring balance and harmony.
