Introduction to the Asana

The Sanskrit name is derived from Sarva (सर्वाङ्ग) meaning all, Anga meaning body part and āsana (आसन) meaning “posture” or “seat”.

Steps to perform the Asana: Sarvangasana
  • Lie down flat on the mat.
  • Keep your feet together and hands tucked under your body with your palms facing up.
  • Now exhale and bring the feet close to the hips, folding the legs against the thighs and raising your torso and hips off the floor.
  • Gently raise the lower part of the body vertically, with a pull of the abdominal muscles, supported by the hands (fingers under the hips and the thumbs above).
  • Feet and toes should be pointing upwards.
  • Slowly straighten your back and balance the entire body weight upon the palms which are at the middle of the spine.
  • Elbows should rest on the floor, toes pointing up, and the neck and the back of the head should touch the floor (final position).
  • To release the pose, gently lower the hips towards the mat, supported by the hands, while inhaling.
  • Release the hands gradually and drop the body on the mat.

Common Misalignments / (Mistakes)
  • Being in an improper position.
  • Feet over the forehead instead of over the hips unbalancing the whole pose.
  • Bending the knees.
  • Separating the feet and legs.
  • Leaning the body to one side.
  • Hips rotating outward while practicing the pose.

  • Avoid in case of headache or migraine.
  • Avoid in case of high blood pressure.
  • Avoid during pregnancy and mensuration.
  • Avoid in case of any kind of neck or shoulder injury.
  • Avoid in case of heart ailments.
  • Avoid in case of old age or weak body.
  • Avoid In the case of an enlarged Thyroid.
  • In case of a weak spleen, liver, or kidney.
  • If suffering from a slipped disc or spondylitis.
  • Avoid in case of brain diseases.
