Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre: Nurturing Holistic Transformation in Leh Ladakh
Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Leh Ladakh, the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC) is a testament to the transformative power of compassion and dedication. Founded by Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena in 1986, MIMC started with humble roots in a small rented room in Leh city. The journey, marked by challenges and unwavering commitment, led to the establishment of the expansive Mahabodhi Devachan campus in Choglamsar in 1991.
A Journey Against All Odds
The early days were marked by scarcity – no water, inadequate roads, and harsh desert conditions. However, guided by the tenacity and compassion of Venerable Sanghasena and his dedicated team, the Devachan campus began to blossom on the vast 200 acres of desert land. What initially seemed an improbable dream gradually took shape, overcoming adversities with resilience and resourcefulness.
Recognising the core issue of poverty and social unrest as illiteracy, Venerable Sanghasena initiated the first residential school for underprivileged children. This step became the catalyst for a broader vision. The Devachan campus evolved to encompass vital humanitarian services, including homes for the aged and visually impaired, a monastery, a nunnery, and a meditation and yoga centre.
A Comprehensive Haven for Well-being
Today, the Devachan campus stands as a haven for thousands of deserving individuals living harmoniously and peacefully. The integrated community, comprising social workers, teachers, doctors, monks, nuns, and care-providers, extends comprehensive care to all segments of society. From children to the elderly, special needs individuals to monks and nuns, and those seeking spiritual development, MIMC’s community model has become a beacon of harmonious, sustainable, and ecological development.
Beyond geographical boundaries, people from around the world visit Devachan to understand and draw inspiration from this harmonious community. MIMC, with its holistic approach, addresses not only the immediate needs of the community but also fosters spiritual development and ecological sustainability.
