What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Ever felt a persistent ache in your lower abdomen or experienced discomfort during intimate moments? These could be signs of PID, a condition that often results from untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia and gonorrhea. It’s essential to understand PID, as it can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
Causes of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): The most common cause, with chlamydia and gonorrhea being the primary culprits.
- Bacterial infections: Non-sexually transmitted bacteria from the vagina can also lead to PID.
- Medical procedures: Sometimes, PID can occur after certain medical procedures, such as endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion, or pelvic surgery.
- Multiple sexual partners: Having multiple sexual partners can increase the risk of STIs, which in turn raises the likelihood of developing PID.
- Weak immune system: Individuals with a weakened immune system may be more susceptible to infections that cause PID.
Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Persistent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis.
- Unusual vaginal discharge that may have an unpleasant odor.
- Pain during intercourse or while urinating.
- Irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting between periods.
- Fever and chills.
- Fatigue and general malaise.
