What is Musculoskeletal Disorder?
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) refer to a range of conditions that affect the muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues in the body. Ever felt a sudden ache in your back after lifting something heavy or experienced stiffness in your knees after sitting for a long time? These could be signs of musculoskeletal disorders. They can make daily activities difficult, causing pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility.
Causes of Musculoskeletal Disorder
- Repetitive strain: Performing the same movements repeatedly, such as typing or lifting, can lead to strain injuries.
- Poor posture: Sitting or standing incorrectly for extended periods can cause muscle imbalances and joint pain.
- Inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle can weaken muscles and make joints stiff, increasing the risk of injury.
- Aging: As we age, our muscles and bones naturally weaken, making us more susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders.
- Injury: Sports injuries, falls, or accidents can result in chronic pain or joint problems.
- Obesity: Excess weight puts extra strain on joints, particularly the knees and hips, leading to conditions like osteoarthritis.
Symptoms of Musculoskeletal Disorder
- Persistent pain in muscles, joints, or bones.
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion, especially after sitting or resting.
- Swelling or inflammation in affected areas.
- Fatigue or a general sense of discomfort.
- Difficulty performing everyday activities like walking, lifting, or bending.
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs.
