Introduction to the Asana

The word “Suryabhedana” comes from the Sanskrit routes “Surya,” meaning “sun,” and “Bhedana,” meaning “piercing” .” Suryabhedana Pranayama focuses on activating the warming solar energy by breathing exclusively through the right nostril. “Pranayama” is derived from “prana,” meaning “life force energy,” and “ayama,” meaning “control.”

Steps to perform the Asana: Suryabhedana Pranayama
  • Find a quiet and comfortable place where you can sit undisturbed.
  • Sit in a comfortable position, such as cross-legged (Sukhasana) or on a Blanket with your feet flat on the ground.
  • Keep your back straight and shoulders relaxed.
  • Use your right hand to create Vishnu Mudra by folding the index and middle fingers towards the palm near the thumb, leaving the ring finger and little finger extended.
  • Rest your left hand on your left knee, palm facing upwards, and use Chin Mudra (touching the thumb and index finger together) for added focus.
  • Close your left nostril gently with your ring finger.
  • Inhale slowly and deeply through your right nostril, filling your lungs completely.
  • Close your right nostril with your thumb and hold the breath for a moment.
  • Release the left nostril and exhale slowly and completely through it.
  • Continue this process for several minutes, focusing on the warming and energizing effect.
  • Conclude the practice with a few moments of deep, slow breathing to bring balance and harmony.
