The Yoga Certification Board (YCB) was established in March 2018 and began its operations in June 2018 under the patronage of the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. YCB is the only Board which has been set up by the Government of India for certification in the field of Yoga. The YCB certifies Yoga professionals under various levels and categories so that the Yoga Professionals can select the level and category as per their skills and competencies. The competences range from basic yoga protocol to Yoga master, from assistant Yoga therapist to Yoga Therapy Consultant. The aim is to bring synergy, quality and uniformity in knowledge and skills by training, prescribing a syllabus for various levels of Yoga trainers. YCB conducts the Professional assessments of Personnel Certification Bodies (PrCBs )and Yoga Institutions/Centers so that the learner is assured of the skill sets possessed by the trainer.

Your Path to Becoming a YCB Accredited Yoga Teacher

YCB has accredited Yoga Institutions/Centres under various categories for training and certification of Yoga aspirants. Yoga aspirants can approach the YCB-certified Yoga Institutions/Centre for training to get the required knowledge and skills and appear in the YCB exam for certification. They shall follow the required guidelines and process of the Yoga Institutions/Centres to take admission in the institute.

YCB accredited professional institutions as a Personnel Certification Body (PrCB) to conduct the YCB exam/assessment for certification of Yoga professionals. The Yoga professionals, who possess the required knowledge and skills, can appear directly in the YCB exam/assessment through the Personnel Certification Body (PrCB) for certification.

For Example:

To apply for Yoga Teacher and Evaluator certification, candidates are preferred to have a degree from a recognized university, though institutions can set their own criteria. There is no age limit. The candidate is required to have completed a minimum of 800 teaching hours, within a duration of 15 months if done part-time or 9 months if done full-time. Certified candidates can work as Master Trainers in Yoga institutions/ studios or educational institutions. A certified candidate can also become an evaluator or assessor of Yoga professionals. Essential skills include strong communication, time management, empathy, and the ability to build relationships with students.

Important: Enrolment fee is fixed, whereas examination fee varies Yoga institution to Yoga institution conducting examination.

Assessment

  • Assessment and skill tests of Yoga professionals are based on the syllabus approved by YCB for various certifications.
  • Assessment of yoga professionals under all the types of certifications, except yoga volunteers, takes place in two stages: theory and practical.
  • The assessment of yoga professionals appearing for certification under Yoga Volunteer is based only on theory.

Theory Exam

  • The theory exam will be based on topics such as Foundation of Yoga, Introduction to Yoga Texts, Yoga and Health, and Applied Yoga (Yoga Teacher & Evaluator certification). The exam comprises  Multiple-Choice questions (MCQ).
  • Theory exam paper is bilingual – English plus a chosen language.

Practical / Skill Test

  • Practical test includes Demonstration, Teaching skill, Therapy skill, Evaluation skill, application of knowledge and field Experience as per the categories of certification.
  • Yoga professionals shall show their experience in conducting training programs before the examiner. The candidate shall show his/her report along with a photograph of the training program conducted by them and a feedback form.

YCB maintains a centralized repository of certified Yoga professionals. From payments to certification, the process is completely digitized for easy access. YCB offers a centralized platform with linkages and details of all assessing agencies, all PrCBs, accredited Yoga institutions/centers, examination schedule, etc. One can easily select the desired exam center and date of the exam. To ensure the quality during exams, 3-tier security is enabled by YCB, including the video recording of the examination process & assessment through impanelled examiners. The YCB certificate includes security features such as a QR Code and a unique number, which can be verified online. This One-time enrolment comes with lifelong validity.

Conclusion

With the growing popularity of Yoga across the world, the demand for institutionally trained Yoga teachers/Yoga Instructors/Yoga Therapists is on the rise. Approximately four lakh Certificates have been issued to Yoga Professionals by YCB, which reflects its importance and value in the Yoga World.
