About

Yoga Alliance is an American NGO recognized as an organization that sets standards for yoga teacher training and certifies yoga schools and teachers. Established in 1999, the mission of this non-profit organization is to support the yoga community and uphold the integrity and diversity of yoga teaching. Based in the USA, the Yoga Alliance provides recognition to interested Yoga institutes around the world.

Yoga Alliance is committed to “advocating” for its wholeness and working to dispel common misconceptions such as yoga = asana; yoga is (solely) an exercise practice; it is only for people of certain body types, races, ethnicities, religions, genders, etc. Yoga Alliance is similarly committed to advocating for greater access to the kind of “whole-person wellness” that yoga enables, including broadening the public understanding of what it means for someone to be “well,” who is deserving of wellness. The role a yoga practice can play in one’s wellness.

Your Path to Becoming a Yoga Alliance Teacher

A Yoga Alliance-registered school (RYS) offers various courses that can lead to different levels of registration for teachers, known as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT). The most common starting point is the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training (YTT), which provides the foundational knowledge needed to teach. This course covers everything from basic asanas and meditation to anatomy, philosophy, and teaching methodology. Once a student has completed a 200-hour training at a registered school, they can apply for the RYT 200 credential.

To reach the next level, RYT 500, a teacher must complete a total of 500 hours of training. This can be done either through a single 500-hour program or by combining the initial 200-hour training with an additional 300-hour advanced training course. These advanced courses allow teachers to specialize and deepen their understanding of more complex topics. Yoga Alliance also offers credentials for experienced teachers (E-RYT) and for specialized fields like prenatal (RPYT) or children’s yoga (RCYT).
