What is Bloating?

Bloating is a common digestive discomfort characterized by an uncomfortable distension of the abdomen, often accompanied by a feeling of tightness, pressure, or gas. It can affect people of all ages and genders, and its intensity and frequency can vary greatly. While bloating is usually harmless, it can be distressing and disruptive to daily life.

Causes of Bloating
  • Gas buildup: When bacteria in the gut ferment undigested carbohydrates, they produce gas, which can cause bloating.
  • Fluid retention: Certain medical conditions, hormonal changes, and excessive sodium intake can lead to fluid retention, contributing to a bloated feeling.
  • Digestive issues: Impaired digestion due to various conditions like IBS, IBD, or gastroparesis can cause bloating as food sits undigested in the gut for longer.
  • Stress: Stress can trigger the release of hormones that impact gut function and motility, leading to bloating.
Symptoms of Bloating
  • Abdominal distension or tightness: A feeling of fullness or pressure in the stomach.
  • Increased abdominal size: Visible swelling or puffiness in the abdomen.
  • Excessive gas: Passing gas more frequently or with increased volume than usual.
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort: Aching, cramping, or general discomfort in the abdomen.
  • Burping: Frequent or excessive belching.
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount: Difficulty finishing a normal-sized meal due to perceived fullness.
  • Changes in bowel movements: Constipation or diarrhea, which may or may not accompany other symptoms.
Yoga Asanas for Bloating
Pranayama for Bloating
  • Ujjayi Pranayama: Improves digestion, reduces bloating by calming the abdominal muscles, and promotes better gas movement. It also alleviates stress, which can help prevent digestion-related discomfort.
  • Kapalbhati Pranayama (Skull-Shining Breath): This fast-paced breathing technique helps clear excess air from the abdomen.
  • Anulom Vilom Pranayama: It promotes a balanced energy flow in the body, reducing stress-induced digestive discomfort and supporting overall gut health.
