What are Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are painful sensations in the lower abdomen experienced by many individuals during their menstrual period. These cramps are caused by the uterus contracting to shed its lining. While some discomfort is common, severe or persistent cramps can significantly impact daily life.

Causes of Menstrual Cramps

  • Endometriosis: Tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus, causing inflammation and pain.
  • Uterine fibroids: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can lead to cramping and other symptoms.
  • Adenomyosis: When uterine lining tissue grows within the muscular wall of the uterus, causing pain and discomfort.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): An infection of the reproductive organs, including the uterus and fallopian tubes, potentially causing cramping.
