What is Acidity?

Acidity, also known as acid reflux or heartburn, is a common digestive issue characterized by a burning sensation in the chest caused by stomach acid flowing back up into the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach). This backflow can irritate the lining of the esophagus, leading to discomfort and potential complications.

Causes of Acidity
  • While diet and lifestyle factors are often the main culprits, several underlying medical conditions can also contribute to acidity, including:

    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): A chronic condition where acid reflux occurs frequently and can damage the oesophagus.
    • Peptic ulcers: Open sores in the lining of the stomach or duodenum (first part of the small intestine).
    • Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining.
Symptoms of Acidity
  • Heartburn: A burning sensation in the chest.
  • Sour taste in the mouth: Often described as an acidic or bitter taste.
  • Difficulty swallowing: Feeling like food is stuck in your throat.
  • Chest pain: Tightness or discomfort in the chest area.
  • Dry cough: A persistent cough not associated with a cold or other illness.
  • Regurgitation: Food or sour liquids coming back up into your mouth.
