What is Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus. They can cause discomfort, itching, and even pain, especially when sitting or during bowel movements. Although they are a common condition, they can be quite uncomfortable. Hemorrhoids are generally harmless but can lead to bleeding and irritation if not managed properly. They are more likely to occur as people age or if there is pressure in the rectal area due to certain lifestyle factors.

Causes of Hemorrhoids
  • Straining during bowel movements: This increases pressure in the rectal veins, leading to hemorrhoid formation.
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea: Both conditions strain the veins in the rectal area.
  • Sitting for long periods: Especially on the toilet, which can increase pressure on the anal veins.
  • Pregnancy: The increased pressure on the pelvic area during pregnancy can lead to hemorrhoids.
  • Obesity: Being overweight puts extra pressure on the veins in the lower body.
  • Low-fiber diet: A lack of fiber can lead to constipation and straining during bowel movements.
  • Heavy lifting: Frequently lifting heavy objects can strain the body and contribute to hemorrhoid development.
Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

  • Pain or discomfort, particularly when sitting.
  • Swelling around the anus.
  • Bleeding during bowel movements.
  • Lumps or swelling near the anus, which may feel tender.
  • Leakage of stool in severe cases.
