What is Bowel Inflammation?

Bowel inflammation refers to the swelling and irritation of the intestines, commonly seen in conditions like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. This inflammation can cause discomfort, pain, and digestive issues. It affects the ability of the intestines to absorb nutrients, leading to symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fatigue. While bowel inflammation can be chronic, certain lifestyle adjustments, including yoga, can help manage its symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Causes of Bowel Inflammation
  • Autoimmune response: The body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in the intestines, leading to chronic inflammation.
  • Genetic factors: Individuals with a family history of IBD are more likely to experience bowel inflammation.
  • Diet: Consuming processed foods, unhealthy fats, and low-fiber diets can aggravate the digestive tract.
  • Infections: Certain bacterial or viral infections can trigger inflammation in the bowel.
  • Stress: Chronic stress can worsen digestive health and lead to inflammatory flare-ups.
  • Smoking: Smoking is a known risk factor, especially for Crohn’s disease, which can inflame the bowels.
  • Overuse of NSAIDs: Frequent use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can irritate the gut lining.
Symptoms of Bowel Inflammation
  • Abdominal pain and cramping: Often felt in the lower abdomen.
  • Chronic diarrhea: Frequent, watery bowel movements.
  • Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired due to the body’s inability to absorb nutrients.
  • Unintentional weight loss: Due to poor nutrient absorption.
  • Bloody stools: A result of inflammation in the intestinal lining.
  • Loss of appetite: Difficulty eating due to discomfort or fear of aggravating symptoms.
  • Bloating and gas: Caused by the irritation and swelling of the intestines.
